Care instructions for your Polymer Clay Jewelry

Taking care of polymer clay jewelry will ensure its appearance for years to come. Some of my polymer clay pieces are over 20 years old and still look brand new.

Here's a guide to help you maintain your polymer clay creations:

  1. Avoid Excessive Heat: Polymer clay can soften and change its shape in excessive heat, so keep your jewelry away from heaters or hot cars. Storing it in a cool, dry place is best.

  2. Handle with Care: While polymer clay is durable, it can still break if handled roughly. Avoid dropping or banging your jewelry against hard surfaces.  Although some pieces feel flexible, bending can result in breaking.

  3. Remove Before Activities: Take off your polymer clay jewelry before swimming, showering, or engaging in strenuous activities to prevent damage is generally recommended. However, it is essentially a plastic.  Enjoy it!  I do not use varnishes on my pieces, so swim, bath, and have fun.  Just remember if the findings are plated, they may show wear quicker.  Stretch bracelets can also be affected by chlorine.

  4. Avoid Chemicals: Keep your jewelry away from harsh chemicals such as perfumes, lotions, and cleaning products, as they can react with the clay and finishes.  Some oils, when in contact with the polymer for long periods of time can affect the finished product and even melt them.  Clean polymer following the directions below.

  5. Clean Gently: If your jewelry gets dirty or exposed to oils, clean it gently with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing too hard, as this can scratch the surface.

  6. Dulled finish: If the item has become dull, often buffing with a muslin wheel or even old denim jeans will bring back the shine.
  7. Store Properly: When not wearing your jewelry, store it in a jewelry box or a soft pouch to prevent dust accumulation and minimize exposure to air and light. Avoid areas with excessive heat.

  8. Repair Carefully: If your jewelry does break, you can often repair it with a strong adhesive specifically designed for use with polymer clay. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and allow sufficient time for the adhesive to cure.  I use Loctite gel to make small repairs if necessary.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your polymer clay jewelry remains beautiful and wearable for years to come.
